Mental Health in Coaching Practice (Virtual Event)

Overview

It is becoming more common for coaching clients to bring aspects of their mental health into the coaching space. This may be the more common issues of anxiety, depression, bereavement and loss or deeper issues such as trauma, childhood issues or family challenges.

When a Coach builds rapport with a client it is understandable that the ensuing trust creates an environment where the client feels able to share their deeper challenges.

The question the coach is often left with is:

“How do I best respond to my client’s mental health needs without causing harm to them or myself?”

This question offers both a practical and an ethical dilemma and this workshop seeks to support coaches to know how to more effectively:

  • identify the signs of the most common mental health challenges.
  • identify when a client is straying into the therapeutic space and the impact of this on you as coach.
  • have tools to respond on the principle of ‘do no harm’.
  • know how to seek support for you as coach and for their clients.
  • establish effective boundaries for care.
  • have greater clarity on the ethical and legal aspects of working with mental health.

Method and content

Using a mixture of presentation and case study discussion, participants will be supported to gain greater awareness, understanding and knowledge about working in the therapeutic space.

Participants will be encouraged to apply the content to their own client experiences, or make use of pre-prepared scenarios, in small group work and whole group discussion.

Learning outcomes

Following this workshop attendees will gain:

  • an understanding of the most common mental health issues and how to identify them.
  • awareness of own boundaries and how to work with competence and confidence.
  • effective tools/methods to respond to clients in distress.
  • knowledge for effective signposting, referring on and the limitations of MHFA and second aid.
  • understanding of standards, guidance, regulatory and legal requirements.
  • understanding of the key differences in ethics and safety for therapeutic work.
